THE END!!!!!!! Week 9 thing 23

I love my job because I am able to say that I learn something new everyday here at the library. And I work at one of the small branches. Every question that comes up from a patron, the phone, or a staff member is an opportunity to find out something new. It is always interesting with unexpected learning.
This experience with O What a Geek! was a lot more challenging than our everyday learning experiences. It involved a lot of time, work and frustration. However, we were exposed to a lot of web technology that we would not have ever explored on our own. It really did expand our comfortable horizons.

Looking at YouTube and My Library Thing were some of the exercises that I enjoyed the most. I will certainly continue using My Library Thing to keep track of the books I read and discover some new authors that might fit into my world.
Thank you for the opportunity to be a "Lifelong Learner."

Week 9 Thing 22

I love the fact that you can download movies and books from the library. I think this is really a service to the our customers. So many people have such diverse needs and wants, that the library (books) cannot fulfill all that the public wants. My Library DV is a valuable tool to offer. Having tried the downloadable books, I will continue to enjoy the real thing because I like the comfort of sitting in a chair, couch, or bed to read. The movies are a different matter because you cannot always get what you want, even with Blockbuster and Cable.
I created a guest account for:

TumbleBookLibrary has a lot of fun additions to the video children's books, but even with all they have to offer I didn't find Madeline, Curious George, etc. I watched Lola at the Library, and did see that they had the Librarian of Basra. but there are some limits to what they can offer. A real library with real books will always have an important place in our world.

Week 9 thing 21

After looking at Podcasts and iTunes Podcast information I decided that you could spend forever looking around. There are endless links and possibilities for searching book reviews, interviews, etc. I could spend a lot of time listening and watching!
I also went into Podcastdirectory.com and MyYahoo audio but it was overwhelming.
I went back to the Pod Cast directory and searched for Anne McCaffrey, Sharon Shinn, book reviews and Star Trek. There was nothing !!!!! for Sharon Shinn, so that was disappointing.
The other descriptions were not all that exciting either.
For the discovery Exercise I tried listening to some of the podcasts, but listening online is just annoying to me. I don't spend a lot of time listening to music or talk radio, so this is probably just a personal preference.
I did create a RSS feed for the Star trek: Pioneers. But I will not ever use it.
I went to the Yahoo Audio and tried to search for Stephanie Meyer but I was only taken on a lot of detours. In my searching, however,I did finally discover blogtalkradio.com/WordSmitten and thought that had possibilities that I would follow.
For use by the library, training session might be a possibility, but I would prefer videos that I could watch as well.

Week 9 thing 20 YouTube

YouTube is really a fun site to see unusual videos. My son had already sent me there to see a few amusing and appalling videos that he had enjoyed. Off and on I have tried it but never at work. Today I tried keywords like Omaha ( nothing I wanted to post) and then libraries. there was an interesting but tedious "Mr. Bean" library episode that I thought about adding to my blog, but thought would be too corny. Instead I decided to post something much worse: Star Trek's DJ SPOCK. Try this link ~ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DMekJ24GNCE

What I thought was really nice is that you can apparently watch whole episodes of the original Star Trek Series. If there were more old TV shows on YouTube we could encourage our patrons to watch the shows this way rather than purchasing the DVDs which seem to wear out after 25 uses. We could still serve our patrons ( though not with Circ numbers) and save money.

So, I changed my mind, if you want to be annoyed by Mr. Bean in the Library try this link:~ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RyDY0hiMZy8

Oops ~ Week 6 Thing 15 skipped

This exercise was really informative. There were so many things to read.
The Library 2.0 Library Journal article was really applicable to us because of all thechanges we are experiencing every day.
For instance, the self check machine has really empowered the patrons to truly help themselves. Our job is to show them how easy it is. The one paragraph below:

At its most basic level, the Library 2.0 model gives library users a participatory role in the services libraries offer and the way they are used. Customers, should they desire, will be able to tailor library services to best meet their own needs. This can be done electronically, such as through the personalization of library web pages, or physically through new service options such as allowing customers to call impromptu book talks or discussion groups.

illustrates how we enable patrons to help themselves with the card catalogue, Suggest a Purchase, talking to the Web Master, and submitting comments and improvements to OPL's homepage.

Week 8 Thing 19

Discovery Exercise:1. Select any site/tool from the lists on Web 2.0 Awards or Recipes for Success. Explore the site you selected.2. Create a post about your discovery. What did you like or dislike about the tool? What were the site’s useful features? Could you see any applications for its use in a library setting?

OH MY GOODNESS!!!! I found the coolest Award Winning Site in Galaxiki!!!!!! I get to create my own world!!!!!!! ( I guess you do have to buy a planet ~ but it is fun to explore anyway.Buying a planet was a little disappointing.) You have to scroll down quite a way to find it on the Web 2.0 Awards.

Galaxiki is the science fiction & fantasy galaxy that anyone can edit. Join the community, get your own solar system & help to build a new online world. A fantastic place for science fiction and fantasy lovers.

It is any ranked as a #2 site, but I was excited to discover it.

Here was a stumbled upon site that was within Galaxiki: It has 20 unusual out-of-this-world church buildings. I've been in one of them. Guess which one!!

WEEK 8 Thing 18

This is even more fun ~ I could get lost in all the wonderful things I could do within Zoho.

The possibilities are endless, except by my own limitations of "how-to" and time. Both of these tools are amazing. But I think I will stick to Zoho for now. It will take me a Year to check out all the things below that I can try.

WEEK 8 Thing 18

This Zoho writer will be a great thing if I can remember all the passwords from all the other things for which I've signed up.
The tool bar is great. The idea of posting work I've done, and not need to use a flash drive, email, etc to send it to another computer will be great.
My poor little flash drive was bent yesterday when I was getting up to help a patron and bumped it with my knee. there is so much important stuff on it that I cringe when I think what might be lost.
This could be a saving move for my future!
After I saved this, I discovered it even gives me a word count for the document.
Now I am going to try and export it to my blog.

Well, I ended up copying and pasting this into my post. I will need to work a little longer and the exporting function.
