Week 7 thing 17 wiki exploration

I looked at each of these sites and found that some are more developed and interesting than others.
The first was:
SJCPL Subject Guides – a pathfinder wiki developed by the St. Joseph County Public Library system
This had a very busy format and didn't find it very useful to me.

The Book Lovers Wiki was great, I looked at a number of lists and found titles that OPL doesn't own that I might enjoy reading.

Book Lovers Wiki - developed by the Princeton Public Library for their 2006 Summer Reading Club (for adults)

Library Success: A best practices wiki This wiki really looks like Wikepedia and is very organized. they even try to validate their info by requiring e-mails for submissions.

The Bull Run Library wiki - a public library wiki and also a Learning 2.0 participant did not strike me as very helpful, and basically a home page for their library. I like our Homepage for Patrons a lot more.

WikiNorthiaa local history wiki by the Yarra Plenty Regional Library (in Melbourne, Australia) was interesting to look at but had a lot of dead ends because they haven't been developed yet.

Week 6 thing 15

The following paragraphs stood out for me in the reading for Library 2.0:

The term "Library 2.0" was coined by Michael Casey on his blog LibraryCrunch as a direct spin-off of the terms Business 2.0 and Web 2.0. Casey suggested that libraries, especially public libraries, are at a crossroads where many of the elements of Web 2.0 have applicable value within the library community, both in technology-driven services and in non-technology based services. In particular, he described the need for libraries to adopt a strategy for constant change while promoting a participatory role for library users.

Also: collections based on popularity and demand vs not so popular:

This keeps some traditional customers satisfied, but non-users might be better served if librarians consider what's called the long tail. Chris Anderson, editor-in-chief of Wired, who coined the phrase “long tail” in an article of the same name in 2004, argues that the demand for movies or books that are not hits far outnumbers the demand for those that are hits. Match those nonhits with the people who are interested in seeing them, and suddenly you have a group of constituents equal to or greater than those who want to see and read the hits.

And from Tame the Web:

Anytown PL’s mission is to promote access to information of all kinds, to anticipate the future needs of our patrons for library services and to give access to ideas in various media. This means we must be looking for new ways to serve our patrons. One way we’ll be doing this is devoting a bit of staff time and library resources to experimenting and trying new things.

I think OPL is certainly trying to meet the needs and desires of the Omaha people. We provide a wide variety of entertainment and informational material, and are very responsive to requests ( as funds allow.) We do innovative programming for Youth with the Homework Hotspots and Lock-ins. We should be proud of what is being offered here.

Week 6 Thing 14

After playing around with Technorati and putting in keywords like Omaha, Omaha Public Library, etc. I discovered that this is really a global site. I got hits from many other countries, and a number of references to Warren Buffet! Some things didn't relate at all that I could see.
I am feeling like I will not finish these exercises because of time restraint. There is so much to do at work, and it is hard to find the spare time.

Week 6 Thing 13

I read through the information (twice) in the Otter Group Delicious tutorial (8.30 min podcast) as well as Us.ef.ul: A beginners guide to Delicious getting started with Delicious. Because I learn best by doing I went ahead and created a Delicious account and bookmarked my ipage with Ingram books. This will be helpful because logging in is always a "process" with passwords, etc. and now I will be able to access this site from home as well as any computer in the system. I also tagged it with words that I would use to find it. I also looked at the account that was set up for us with thePLCMCL2 account and looked at a number of links and comments.

Week 5 Thing 12 Rollyo link

Well, this has been a frustrating exercise. I have been trying to link my Rollyo site to my blog, and have had little success. Trying to remember names and passwords are challenging, and I am keeping them the same for as many as possible.

Here is my link but it doesn't seem to http://rollyo.com/suzansorensen/reference_search/

Week 5

Well, with great thanks to Ben Stacy, I finally was able to complete this assignment. Everytime I posted the Library Thing link, I thought I was doing it wrong because it didn't look like it would work. The final time, Ben tells me to type something in the search box, and ~Voilé~ it brought up a drop-down box with results. Ben said he was only on Week 2, but he has helped me over a number of rough spots and deserves some credit. Thank you, Ben!

Week 5 "My Library Thing"

Here is "My Library Thing". There are so many things you can do with this: find reviews, talk about, form groups, etc. April Earl had actually introduced me to this a year ago. The real trick for me was remembering my password. Now that I added a few books and customized my homepage, it is a little more interesting.

Week 5

After working with a couple of generators, (baby generator, Holloween pumpkin, and photos) I finally was able to get a flag to fly on my sidebar. If you click on it you can get it to wave. However, there are pop ups that followed the post from "Make Sweet" that I can't control.

Week 4

After a lot of experimenting with Flikr, and a lot of failures, the slide show finally was able to "slide" onto my Blog for you to enjoy. I have learned so many things, especially with the help of co-workers.
Working on WEEK 4 I enjoyed the eases of http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0klgLsSxGsU&feature=related and discovered that I had already created the Feeds into my Blogline account. How easy was that? I didn't even know that I had done it. Of course, now I am trying to figure out how to link them directly to my Blog here. I will subscribe to some of the other bloggers on O!What a Geek.
Some of the Feeds that are in my Blogline are:

Hurrah!

I've finally learned how to delete my posts that are big mistakes. Each day I learn something new.
I'm a lifelong learner.

Week 3 continued

If you would like to see more photos of the boxing up of Sorensen Branch you might have success with the "Tag" Sorensen Library Remodel. Or you may try this link:http://www.flickr.com/photos/30617397@N04/ Good luck!

We've come so far!

Can you believe this? We were packing up and created such a mess in our workroom. It is a different world now.

O! What a Geek

I have been playing with with Flickr and downloading pictures to my account. Because of all the passwords, I spend a lot of time trying to remember "who" I am. Because of my 2 Blogs I have now even stuck pictures onto the older, wrong account, and these pictures are the more current of the Branch remodel. I've e-mailed the "powers that be" to remove the incorrect Blog, but of course the person is on vacation. Oh well, that is how the entire month has been going. I discovered that Murphy's Law has been in full swing at Sorensen and in my life. Two Blogs, Flickr assuming an AOL account when I was sharing my account with my home email family & friends. It seems like I am now learning most by making mistakes.

Here we are ready to move out of Sorensen Branch.

Here is the strong man our our group!

Check out how Sorensen Branch looked as we cleared out!

Our Empty Library

Here is our manager standing by our very empty shelves before the remodeling crew will arrive at the Sorensen Branch Library.

Isn't the cool weather wonderful today? I am so thankful for the change from the heat of summer. The coolness will set me in the mood for the premiere of Opera Omaha's "Blizzard Voices." ( a touch of Nebraska history!)

New blog

Hi everyone:
The e-mail in my previous blog was incorrect so I had to fix it with a new Blog site.
I finished reading about lifelong learners, and noted the 7.5 steps in being a lifelong learner.
have a great day.
